Chueca is an area of the Justicia neighborhood, in the Centro district of the Spanish city of Madrid. It lacks an administrative entity. It takes its name from the Chueca square and metro, dedicated to the composer Federico Chueca, and is limited to the north by Fernando VI street, to the south by Gran Vía, to the east by Barquillo street and to the west by those of Hortaleza and Fuencarral.1 At the end of the 20th century it became the neighborhood of the homosexual community of Madrid.2 3
In the 1980s, some of the first stores aimed at the profile of the LGBT community in Madrid (Café Figueroa, Black & White, Sachas or the Berkana bookstore) were opened in the area and progressively went from being a marginal space, until reaching the character open cosmopolitan that has meant for the neighborhood the recognition of its cultural attraction of international fame, without losing part of the original castizo air. 4 5
In the area are also the Plaza del Rey and Pedro Zerolo. One of the biggest annual tourist events in Chueca is the Gay Pride celebrations, held every year at the beginning of summer.5
